No one told me to buckle my seatbelt and return the tray to its upright position -- I just landed in the heart of the Big Apple with a ton of ambition and, if I do say so myself, a teeny little flair for marketing when I met up with a newly minted Harvard MBA to create TRIAD International a small boutique advertising and corporate communication agency.
Wow. It seems another life, but that was the start of it all for yours truly. Even then, with the timing right -- banks recently de-regulated, my partner & I fluent in Bankingese -- I knew the virtue of the creating just the right marketing approach.
That was a time when lunch in London, dinner on 5th Avenue was not uncommon.
When one is tired of London, Samuel Johnson said, “she’s tired of life.”
And so this she was. I was successful and I was bored.
Before me opened the ultimate cage fight in Manhattan -- the restaurant biz -- and I couldn’t resist.
Once again, I had to find a marketing approach to stand out. Thus was born the Mason Jar cocktails at my Dew Drop Inn, with its vintage 50s feel right down to the blue sparkle vinyl and shrine to Elvis.
I’m credited, so I’ve been told, with saving the tiny paper drink umbrella from extinction. An aging supplier was almost out business until I found an old catalogue of his and began to feature all the plastic gee gaws in my infamous drinks. ( soon to be copied everywhere)
Did I really spark a revival in Rolling Rock beer? Stage the Great American Meatloaf Contest, with appearances from Madonna, Keith Haring and the eponymous Meatloaf?
Guilty as charged.
It was successful. It was fun. It was what marketing is supposed to be -- and I loved and I still love it.
A trip cross country and an opportunity to let another passion take flight -- perhaps the last and best to leave the nest -- led me to the only FDA drug registered manufacturer of nutritional supplements.
Calling on doctors, whom I came to respect and adore, I realized they could really use some of my creative help.
And so SBRX was born.
I want to take everything I’ve internalized about marketing and offer it you!
Be nice, and I’ll toss in a colorful tiny paper drink umbrella!
